Purpose

Too Good To Go aims to help reduce food waste around the world. The company created a mobile app that links restaurants and stores with extra food that is not sold to customers who can buy this food at a lower price. Customers cannot choose which food they receive, only what is available. The food on the app costs one-third of its usual price. The company says this helps prevent food from being thrown away, which is a big problem for the environment. In three years, the app had more than 9.5 million users. By 2022, the app had over 57.7 million users and 154,000 businesses signed up, with 139 million meals collected. In 2019, the company had 350 employees in Europe. By June 2023, the company was estimated to have 1,289 employees.

Use

Food businesses must tell the TGTG company what food they have available each day. They must describe the type of food (such as baked goods, meals, fruits, or vegan items) and the price for a "surprise bag." The surprise bag’s contents are chosen by the business, not the customer. The original prices of the food items are three or more times higher than the TGTG price. Businesses must give this information early, based on how much food they expect to have left over, not after selling food.

Users must sign up to use the service. A smartphone with Internet access that runs Android or iOS is required. The user opens the TGTG app, which shows food businesses available within a selected distance and time. The customer can then order and pay for a "surprise bag." If the business no longer has the expected extra food, they can cancel the order at any time. The customer is informed by text message. The customer can cancel the order with two hours’ notice. The customer must go to the food business during a set pickup time (often 30 or 60 minutes long) and use the app—connected to the Internet—to confirm the pickup. The transaction is completed at that time.
