The Climate Registry (TCR) is a non-profit group led by U.S. states and Canadian provinces and territories. TCR creates and runs programs for reporting greenhouse gases (GHG) worldwide, both for organizations that choose to participate and those that must follow rules. It helps organizations measure, report, and check the carbon in their activities to manage and lower it. TCR also gives advice to governments in countries and around the world about measuring, reporting, and verifying greenhouse gases.

History

The Climate Registry was started in 2007 to continue the work of the California Climate Action Registry (CCAR). CCAR was created by the State of California in 2001 to support businesses in managing and reducing their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Through a state requirement, CCAR developed rules to help track emissions and created an online tool called the Climate Action Registry Reporting Tool (CARROT) to collect and store emissions reports. Members of CCAR were among the first in the world to measure their emissions using detailed and strict standards and share those reports online. CCAR and its members helped shape California’s climate change policies, including Assembly Bill 32 (AB 32), and ensured that early efforts to reduce emissions were properly recognized by the state. Knowing that climate change is a global issue and that emissions reporting needs consistent data across regions, CCAR played a key role in forming The Climate Registry (TCR) to expand emissions reporting efforts to all of North America. CCAR stopped accepting emissions reports for 2009 in December 2010 and moved its members to The Climate Registry. Today, CCAR is part of the Climate Action Reserve, which is a sister organization of The Climate Registry.
