Background

For many years, people often disposed of waste on the ground, in rivers, or left it in open areas. This led to the creation of thousands of polluted places that were not properly managed or left behind. Examples of these polluted sites include old warehouses, factories, processing plants, and landfills. Because of growing worries about health and environmental dangers from these sites, the 96th Congress created the Superfund program in 1980 to clean them up.

The Superfund program is managed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) along with state governments. In New Jersey, the Department of Environmental Protection's (NJDEP) Site Remediation Program is responsible for managing the Superfund program.

As of August 16, 2024, there are 115 Superfund sites listed on the National Priorities List (NPL). Thirty-six sites have been cleaned and removed from the list.
