Save the Elephants (STE) is a group that protects elephants and their habitats. It was started in 1993 by Iain Douglas-Hamilton. STE is a nonprofit group registered in the United Kingdom, with its main office in Nairobi, Kenya. Its main research center is located in Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya.

STE’s goal is to help elephants survive and keep the beauty and health of the places they live. It also aims to show people how smart elephants are and how they live in different ways. STE works to help humans and elephants live peacefully together.

The elephants in Samburu are among the most studied in the world. Scientists have detailed records of nearly 1,000 elephants and how they interacted over 29 years. Information about their behavior and population changes has helped scientists learn how the illegal hunting of elephants for ivory has affected elephant populations across Africa.

STE was the first group to use radio and GPS to track elephants. This helps scientists understand ecosystems from the elephants’ point of view. Information about where elephants move is helping protect them from poachers. Long-term data also helps plan how to protect elephants in the environment.

In 2013, STE started the Elephant Crisis Fund with the Wildlife Conservation Network. This fund supports groups working to stop the killing of elephants, stop the trade of ivory, and reduce the demand for ivory to help elephants survive. Since then, the fund has supported 104 groups in 44 countries across Africa and Asia. All the money raised is used directly for projects in the field.
