It focuses on research about how population, natural resources, and the environment influence each other. The journal was first created in 1978 under the name Journal of Population and changed its name to Population and Environment in 1980.

Brian Thiede from Penn State University is the current editor-in-chief. Vaida Thompson was the first editor-in-chief from 1977 to 1984.

Past editors-in-chief include Elizabeth Fussell from Brown University, Lori Hunter from the University of Colorado Boulder, Landis MacKellar from the Vienna Institute of Demography, Kevin MacDonald from California State University, Long Beach, and Virginia Abernethy from Vanderbilt University. Both Abernethy and MacDonald are known as prominent white supremacists.

According to the Journal Citation Reports, the journal had an impact factor of 4.283 in 2021.
