Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy, short for MKWC, is a nonprofit organization that works to protect the environment and its wildlife.
The Conservancy is located in Nanyuki, which is a UN World Heritage Site and a place with a wide variety of plant and animal life. It is home to 28 different animal species and has a population of about 1,200 animals.
The Conservancy’s main activities include a program to breed and reintroduce Mountain Bongo antelope, which are critically endangered, an animal orphanage, and an education program to teach about conservation.
In the 1950s and 1960s, as poaching increased, a reserve was created to protect animals that had lost their parents. This reserve has since become MKWC and plays a key role in protecting and growing the population of Mountain Bongo. It works with the Kenya government’s Kenya Wildlife Service and follows the National Mountain Bongo Recovery and Action Plan 2019–2023.
Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy is a member of the IUCN, an international organization focused on protecting nature. It is one of only 13 conservancies in Kenya with this membership.
The Conservancy also helps reintroduce animals to the wild. In November 2023, giraffes were brought back to Mount Kenya for the first time in 40 years.
