Eugene Lavon Banks (born May 15, 1959) was an American professional basketball player and coach. He was born and grew up in Philadelphia.
In-situ conservation means protecting plant and animal species in their natural habitats, such as forests where tree species live. This method helps keep the environment healthy and ensures ecosystems remain balanced. The opposite approach is ex situ conservation, which involves moving endangered species to a different location.
The Millennium Seed Bank Partnership (MSBP or MSB), which was once called the Millennium Seed Bank Project, is the largest program in the world for saving plants outside their natural homes. It is managed by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in the UK. The project began in 1996 after receiving a grant from the Millennium Commission in 1995.
A seed bank (also called seed banks, seeds bank, or seed vault) stores seeds to protect genetic diversity. This makes it a type of gene bank. There are several reasons to store seeds.
Conservation genetics is a field that combines different areas of study, such as population genetics, to understand how genes function in populations. This helps manage natural resources, protect genetic diversity, and prevent species from becoming extinct. Scientists working in this field come from various backgrounds, including population genetics, natural resource management, molecular ecology, molecular biology, evolutionary biology, and systematics.
The eastern quoll (Dasyurus viverrinus, previously called the eastern native cat) is a medium-sized meat-eating marsupial (dasyurid) and one of six still-living quoll species. Found only in Australia, they live on the island state of Tasmania. They were thought to be extinct on the mainland after 1963.
The Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii; palawa kani: purinina) is a meat-eating marsupial in the Dasyuridae family. It once lived across mainland Australia but became extinct there about 3,500 years ago. Today, it is only found on the island of Tasmania.
Koala conservation groups, programs, and government laws are focused on protecting koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus), an Australian marsupial that lives in gum trees. The Australian Government declared the species endangered by extinction in 2022. The koala was once listed as Least Concern on the Red List but was changed to Vulnerable in 2016.
The 2019–20 Australian bushfire season, also called the Black Summer, was one of the most severe and damaging fire seasons in Australia’s history. Extremely dry weather, low soil moisture, and early fires in Central Queensland caused the bushfire season to begin earlier than usual in June 2019. Over 10,000 fires burned, mostly in the southeast of the country, until March 2020.
The Predator Free 2050 plan was created by the government of New Zealand. Its goal is to remove completely three types of animals that were brought to the country by people: possums, rats, and stoats. This plan aims to achieve this by the year 2050.
