Bilby Ranch Lake Conservation Area is a public conservation area in northwest Missouri, United States. The area covers 5,111 acres (2,068 hectares) and was created in 1987 when the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) bought a large tract of land that was once part of John S. Bilby's 26,000-acre ranch.
Description
The area has a mix of native prairie, cropland, and areas with trees. This makes it one of the biggest prairie areas left in northern Missouri. There are about 150 acres of surface water, including the 110-acre Bilby Ranch Lake, which is located in the southeast part of the property.
Recreation and Facilities
Bilby Ranch Lake Conservation Area provides many outdoor activities for visitors. People who fish can catch largemouth bass, channel catfish, and bluegill in the lake and nearby ponds. There are facilities such as a concrete boat ramp, floating fishing dock, fish cleaning station, and a restroom.
The area is also a place for hunting, with ring-necked pheasant being a focus for conservation efforts. Other animals that can be hunted include white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and different small animals. The conservation area is open for hiking, birdwatching, and nature photography. Several unpaved roads and trails allow access to different habitats.
History
The land was once part of the historic Bilby Ranch, which was created by John S. Bilby in the 19th century. By the year 1900, the ranch had become one of the largest livestock operations in the United States. A small town named Fairview was located in the southeast part of the current conservation area. The ranch stayed active until the Great Depression caused it to end operations in 1936.
Geography
The largest nearby city to the conservation area is Maryville, which is about 14 miles east of Bilby Ranch along Highway 46. Other nearby towns include Skidmore to the southeast and Quitman to the northeast.
The conservation area is located a few miles west of the Nodaway River. Huff Creek flows through the northern part of the park, and Minnesota Valley Creek begins in the southwestern area of Bilby Ranch.
