History

The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) was created in 1972 by the McMahon government. In September 1973, The Townsville Daily Bulletin reported that a site south of Townsville was almost certain to be selected for the facility, which would become Australia's largest marine science institute. The newspaper also stated that the project was expected to cost between $7 million and $8 million.

Description

The main job of the institute is to do research that helps protect the ocean and use its resources wisely. They study many things, from large ecosystems to tiny ocean life.

AIMS works to protect and use Australia's ocean resources in a way that keeps them healthy for the future. Their research helps manage tropical ocean areas worldwide, especially the Great Barrier Reef, Ningaloo Marine Park in Western Australia, and northwest Australia.

They study climate change, coral bleaching, dredging, ocean plastics, ocean acidification, and track water quality, sea temperature, Australian reefs, and ocean animals.

The main office is on a 207-hectare coastal area 50 km from Townsville, Queensland. It's in a scientific area next to a National Park and Marine Reserve. This location was chosen because it's near the center of the Great Barrier Reef and has clean seawater. Being close to the ocean helps scientists quickly move samples to labs.

There are smaller offices in Perth, Western Australia, and Darwin, Northern Territory. These offices help connect with research partners and clients in those areas.

The institute reports to the Minister for the Environment and Water.

Marine science developments

AIMS is part of a nationwide effort in Australia to fund marine science projects that improve technologies, infrastructure, and systems for responding to marine issues. As part of a Super Science Initiative, Australia invested AUD$387.7 million in marine and climate science in 2012 to help protect and respond to challenges in the underwater environment (Coffin, 2012).

The Institute found the oldest known tropical fish, a midnight snapper, in December 2020. Scientists determined the fish was 81 years old.
